Joe Kiani

Joe Kiani is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Masimo — an innovative medical technology company that produces noninvasive patient monitoring solutions, among many other products. Masimo’s technology is used to monitor more than 200 million patients around the world each year in healthcare facilities and at home.

Founding Masimo

Kiani co-founded Masimo in 1989 on a mission to create a device that could accurately monitor blood oxygen levels in patients — even during low perfusion and motion. He has a passion for improving patient safety through the development of unrivaled medical and consumer technology. He is the co-inventor of Masimo SET^® pulse oximetry, which has been called “modern pulse oximetry.” SET^® revolutionized how clinicians measure this “fifth vital sign” and how they care for patients in the hospital and at home. 

Today, Kiani’s leadership has led to numerous breakthrough healthcare and home care solutions. Kiani continues to innovate and expand Masimo’s footprint in the professional healthcare and telemonitoring industry, while also harnessing the company’s expertise to expand into new arenas, such as consumer wearable devices.

Patient Safety Commitment

Kiani is also a dedicated patient safety advocate and founded the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, an organization committed to reaching zero preventable patient deaths by 2030. He is also a member of several boards, including the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and Caltech University. In 2023, he was awarded the Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Award for his relentless commitment to creating safer healthcare environments.  

Other Efforts in Patient Care

Masimo also operates the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare, an organization committed to advancing healthcare and fostering innovation in medical technology. Additionally, Kiani is the CEO of Cercacor, a company created by Masimo to reach consumers and bring patient monitoring to the home. He also co-founded A Starting Point and Like Minded Media Ventures, which are committed to engaging communities and making information more accessible.

Joe Kiani’s Background

Kiani was born in Shiraz, Iran and immigrated to the United States with his family as a child. After graduating high school early, Kiani attended San Diego State University (SDSU), where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degrees in electrical engineering.
